HY!n PROGRAM

GOALS

Initiative goal: Educate 1 million young Hoosiers with nutrition and fitness literacy programs delivered through youth-serving organizations or experiences such as after school programs. Healthy Youth Indiana complements efforts to improve fitness and nutrition in schools and at home.

Nutrition and fitness literacy program goal: Youth will develop a healthier lifestyle through “choosing food for life” and “active play every day.”

PHASE 1

Our intention for Phase 1 was to offer the HY!n program through our partner organizations – primarily YMCA, Extension Services and Health Education Center summer programs at about 6 locations around the state of Indiana. These programs and locations reached a diverse population of children ages 9-11 – urban, rural, suburban, socioeconomically, racially, and ethnically diverse.

We trained Y staff with some experience in health or wellness to deliver the program, and offered experienced educators from the Ruth Lilly Health Education Center.
The program was delivered between June 1 and August 15, 2006.

CURRENT PHASE

Beginning November 1, 2006 we will start teaching Healthy Youth Indiana to 9,000 children over two years thanks to funding received from the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust. Our goal is to reach 4,000 children in year one, and another 5,000 in year two. To ensure that we reach even more children in the next couple of years, the Ruth Lilly Health Education Center will be holding a “Train the Trainer” session for adults in the spring of 2007. Currently Healthy Youth Indiana is being taught in after school settings and will soon be taught in a summer camp setting as well.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

All Healthy Youth Indiana programs are based on Indiana educational standards and the experience of seasoned health, youth and education professionals.

We will have six 20 minute modules that organizations can present however they best fit into their schedules. Each module will involve information sharing and an engaging activity. The intention is that all six modules are presented so that we have “apples to apples” evaluation.

Pre- and post- tests will be conducted with all participating children to evaluate learning, effectiveness of the program, and provide feedback prior to further program expansion later in 2006. There will be a component that engages parents as well.
