ABOUT HEALTHY YOUTH INDIANA
Healthy Youth Indiana, or HY!n, is a collaboration of leaders in education, youth and government committed to reducing or preventing childhood overweight in Indiana by developing, evaluating and delivering health education programs to young people that encourage healthier lifestyles by making better choices about the food they eat and playing every day.
OUR GOAL – educate 1 million young Hoosiers through nutrition and fitness literacy
We are a dynamic, multi-organization statewide collaboration of education and youth leaders focused on educating kids. Initial partners include representatives from:
- Ruth Lilly Health Education Center
- YMCA of Greater Indianapolis
- Purdue University Cooperative Extension Services
- Indiana Department of Health
- Indiana Department of Education
- IU School of Informatics
- Dr. Bill Wishner, former special consultant to Indiana Department of Health, and medical advisor in Global Endocrine and Cardiovascular Product Safety, Eli Lilly and Company
- Dr. Lloyd Kolbe, professor of applied health science, Indiana University, and former director, CDC Division of Adolescent and School Health
HY!n is part of the solution to preventing or reducing childhood overweight. Working collaboratively with local and statewide initiatives, we are sharing the responsibility and shaping the future of Indiana children.
Healthy Youth Indiana is unique among organizations addressing this critical issue with our commitment to:
- providing research- and standards-based nutrition and fitness literacy programs that help kids learn to “choose food for life” and “active play everyday”;
- helping youth retain knowledge while having fun; and
- our commitment to evaluating outcomes.
Healthy Youth Indiana is NOT awareness building. We are real action and are already making a real difference.
Our current youth-serving partners are already getting results. The Ruth Lilly Health Education Center, one of the nation’s leaders; the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis; and Purdue University Cooperative Extension Services and 4-H in Marion County (Central Indiana) combined, educate about 115,000 youth annually.
A part of HY!n’s vision is to be a comprehensive clearinghouse for health education programs and information. We’ll share that information via this Web site.
